JAMES B. GRANT, PRESIDENT

J. B. GRANT & ASSOCIATES

J. B. Grant has over thirty-five years of top management experience, working at the highest levels of state and national governments, representing the interests of agriculture and agribusiness. From 1971 to 1992 he represented the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture in Washington, D. C. and throughout the world. He served as the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer from 1977 to 1992. He was Assistant Executive Director from 1971 to 1977. Prior to 1971 he served the Tennessee Department of Agriculture in a number of capacities, including Special Assistant to Commissioner of Agriculture. Under his leadership many far reaching and innovative programs have been developed and implemented. Utilizing superb communicative skills, he has brought together many diverse interests and views to work collectively for the advancement of agriculture and agribusiness world-wide. 

Mr. Grant was also a farm broadcaster. He originated and produced the popular public interest program, Farm and Consumer News, heard on over 100 stations in Tennessee, during the 1960's and early 70's. He did broadcasts from as far as Japan and Alaska bringing current news and happenings in agriculture and consumer trends to his listeners state-wide. He was also a regular on several Farm TV talk programs across the state, keeping the viewers informed on the various programs and responsibilities of the state department of agriculture. 

Upon retirement from NASDA, Mr. Grant opened his consulting firm, J. B. Grant & Associates on September 16, 1991 and continues to operate world-wide, concentrating on International Agribusiness issues and opportunities. J. B. Grant & Associates has represented the following: E. J. Krause & Associates; Food Marketing Institute; U. S. Department of Agriculture; Food Distributors International; Taiwan Frozen Food Association; Michigan Power & Light, among others.

Over twenty years of effective representation before the Congress of the United States, working directly with members of Congress and staff. Expert preparation and presentation of testimony on many subjects before the Congress of the United States.

Negotiated, secured and managed state / federal cooperative contracts with budgets in excess of $ 20 million annually.

Established and had overall management responsibility for the NASDA National Food and Agriculture Exposition and related programs, promoting processed food products world-wide. This program was responsible for hundreds of millions of dollars in sales of U. S. food products.

Established the NASDA Research Foundation with prime responsibility in farmland retention, conservation and water quality.

Established the States / Provinces Agricultural Accord, working at the Provincial Minister of Agriculture level in Canada on trade and other issues.

Established a formal working arrangement with the Mexico Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, dealing at the Ministerial level, with many trade, marketing and other programs and opportunities.

Negotiated and developed formal agreements on national food safety programs with the U. S. Department of Agriculture, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Food and Drug Administration.

Involved and instrumental in the development and passage of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act of 1972 and participated in re-authorizations and amendments since. Also directly involved in the implementation of FIFRA at the state level.

Maintained a leadership role at state and national levels in the development of legislation, regulations and programs affecting the marketing of agricultural products, food safety, minor usage of pesticides, groundwater, wetlands, farmland protection, soil and water conservation, animal and plant health, collection of statistics and state related programs, and many other state / federal disciplines.

Developed a diverse network of contacts world-wide, in government, private industry, food and related organizations and associations, in the promotion of processed food products in over 50 countries. Programs developed and managed have been responsible for hundreds of millions of dollars in the sale of U. S. food products.

Actively participated in the development and passage of all Farm Bills from 1972 to 1991.

Developed extensive contacts and cooperation with farm organizations, commodity groups, cooperator organizations and agribusiness in the mutual development of policies and programs and their administration.

Expert, detailed, comprehensive knowledge of the structure, organization, budgets, policies, personnel and programs of State Departments of Agriculture.

The GATT, Canadian Free Trade Agreement and then the North American Free Trade Agreement have been areas of high priority involvement.

Twenty years of experience working directly with 19 national organizations representing the regulatory and service programs of nearly every facet of the U. S. agricultural system, Gaining in-depth knowledge of the structure, personnel, programs, budgets and policies of those organizations.
